Whirlwind (Deluxe)

Lainey Wilson

the take

I was kind of neutral on Lainey Wilson's "Whirlwind", and I kind of feared that this would age terribly for me after some time passed. Lo and behold, I was right. First, let me just say the best thing about these deluxe additions as a whole is the fact that it doesn't sound out of place with the original album's tracks. It helps keep the sound more confined into one space. That said, though... I may be finally beginning to realize that Lainey's uptempo country rock songs are not really for me. For my ears, it sounds like she's doing way too much to attempt to evoke emotion and it comes off as somewhat cringe. The slower country songs, like "Good Horses", "4x4xU", and "Somewhere Over Laredo" are ones I gravitate to more. Granted, it's not the best country I've ever heard, but it's way better than anything else on "Whirlwind", either deluxe or otherwise. Simply put, not even the deluxe edition. can hide the fact this album aged poorly for me.
