MR. IDGAF (DELUXE)

MC BXB

the take

Though I'd say I'm tapped into West Coast hip-hop, I will admit I'm not all that into the Los Angeles rap scene as of late. It's not that I don't like it or that I don't care for it, but it's kind of hard to juggle music when you're discovering something new every day or two. That said, my coworker homie of mine told me about Lynwood, CA rapper MC BXB. I listened to a few of his standalone singles, and I liked the vibe he presented on said singles. I promised myself I'd give an album of his a listen. Fast forward to now and I finished listening to MC BXB's latest album "MR. IDGAF", which is actually fitting, given what he raps about. I didn't think MC BXB would be able to keep my attention for the entire duration of this, but he actually did just that. Off the rip, I can tell that MC BXB is a student of the culture, both Los Angeles hip-hop and chicano mixed with a bit of urban as a whole. Each track presents itself as something different from the one before, as it ranges from different West Coast rap tropes from the 90's but is modernized to the present. Basically, "GET MY MONEY" got me standing up and began Crip walking like I'm about that life... and is my personal favorite on here. Anyway, as for MC BXB himself, he raps and sings, sometimes going either one way or the other, or does both on the same song. I'm a fan of his rapping more than his singing, to be honest. He can adapt to any kind of production with ease and use it to his advantage; as for his singing, it's not the worst thing I've heard, as it's still cool to vibe with. While there are a few moments where this album is just average to me, I do respect how MC BXB is letting the world know the sounds that influenced him and putting that into his music. The fact that he's multidimensional and can switch up with any beat is incredible. I didn't expect this to be a classic, but "MR. IDGAF" is still a fucking bop to the West Coast hip-hop head in me.
