Big 64

Goonew

the take

Goonew has always been a rapper that stuck out to me, especially when it comes to the DMV rap scene. There's something about his slightly-offbeat-yet-still-perfect-for-the-beat whisper flow that keeps me wanting to know what he wanted to get off his chest next. So far, I've reviewed three of his projects: his collaboration tape with Chaz Bandz & Borleone ("Hey Auntie"), "Goonwick" (the first solo mixtape I've ever listened to by Goonew), and his "Homicide Boyz" tape with Lil Dude. (The latter is probably my favorite DMV project within the last ten years.) All of them were pretty favorable. "BIG64" is one of those ones where I thought it was good enough, but had a lot of potential to be better than it kind of is. The beats on here are a perfect representation of Goonew's sound as a whole, and yet, I find myself not being able to be fully consumed by it this time around. They're all not bad at all, but only a few managed to keep me in a chokehold all this time. (Those few are "Typo", "Came In", and "Cloud".) Goonew maintains his same flow throughout and at times it made the project kind of stale at certain points throughout. Regardless, he still shows us that only he is the one who ever mastered the whisper flow to perfection. "BIG64" doesn't hit the same for me now like it did when I first checked it out, but it's still pretty damn enjoyable when it's all said and done.
