the take
I’ve heard every single one of these songs before. This is a great example of a perfect record. It’s like Dixon was reclaiming his discography, making it known that these are his famous songs, and frankly, he does them better than the Doors, Howlin Wolf, Led Zeppelin, et al. His voice is intense, and harsh, and it’s perfect. The harmonica, piano, bass and drums are the pieces that really stand out. His voice and guitar, which are front and centre, leave a lot of room for the rest of the band to do their thing. I Can’t Quit You Baby is always and forever my favourite of his songs. His vocal prowess and guitar artistry in that song is extraordinary. You can tell that SRV loved him too, Pride and Joy is basically Seventh Son, 12 bar always sounds very similar. Spoonful kicks ass. Soaring voice. It’s like I said about Hard Again, it’s a blues tune that sounds like the blues, or what you would expect when somebody says “Blues Music”. The breakdown with the piano is some excellent work. I find it funny that Led Zeppelin’s first record had two of Willie’s songs, that later appeared here, and were absolutely killer tunes. I love those slow blues tunes, I Can’t Quit You and Shook Me are his two very best for sure. I’m Your Hoochie was super groovy. The guitar work was phenomenal. Fav Track I Can’t Quit You, Baby
