the take
After the excess and experimentation of the 90s, U2 strip things back here. The album is rooted in clarity, warmth, and emotional directness, built around the idea of returning to what matters: love, faith, and human connection. Bono is at his most open and sincere. There’s less irony, less abstraction. The band is locked in. The Edge returns to his signature chiming guitar textures, but with a renewed sense of purpose rather than nostalgia. The rhythm section is understated but precise, giving the songs space to breathe. There’s a cohesion here that had been missing. It’s a soft reset. The album doesn’t reach the daring heights of their earlier work, but it succeeds in grounding U2 again. Fav Track Beautiful Day
