the take
I may or may not be a bit biased when it comes to this review because I've been a fan of Ms. Jade Bird and her music since practically forever (like 2018-ish). I was probably one of the few who liked her "Burn the Hard Drive" EP she released last year due to it sounding slightly different than her usual Americana sound. However, Jade returns to her roots on her latest effort "Who Wants to Talk About Love?" and quite honestly, I'm ready to discuss that subject with her... or at least, hear what she has to say. Lyrically, the album details with Jade Bird's emotional state and point of view before, during, and after her divorce with her now-ex-husband some years ago, and the pain in her voice kind of make it obvious. She's confident enough to become vulnerable in letting her true feelings show over the music and I feel that's what I love about this album the most. More often than not, I see myself in the same emotional situation as her, thus she's singing directly to my soul. Plus, it helps how the instrumentation on here is more reminiscent of Jade's self-titled debut but this time some extra experimentation to keep the sound fresh (which it does). "Avalanche" is my clear favorite on here, but this whole album is just so damn amazing to me to where I'd rather just have it play in order from top to bottom. In other words... yes, Ms. Jade Bird, I'd love to talk about love with you any time. (Translation: she just doesn't miss.)
