Since I Left You (20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition)

The Avalanches

the take

Like a collage—all over the place, and it somehow works in places. The Avalanches lean fully into the concept and it’s where the record is most successful. It feels like drifting through radio stations in a dream, every transition smudged just enough to keep you there. There’s not much to hold onto lyrically. The fragments of voices, lifted and repurposed, function more as texture than meaning. It’s fitting for the concept, but it does keep the album at a slight emotional distance. The musicianship, if one can call it that, is in the construction. The layering is meticulous, often dazzling in how seamlessly disparate sounds are woven together. At its best, it’s hypnotic and warm; at its weakest, it can drift into background pleasantness, more vibe than substance. Still, the ambition and execution are there. It’s a record built on feeling rather than form, and while it doesn’t always fully land emotionally, its atmosphere is undeniable. Fav Track Two Hearts in 3/4 Time
