Special Occasion

Bobby V.

the take

Truth be told, the only reason I know this album is because of my ex and their love for Turn the Page. I never really cared for Bobby V at the time—I was deep in my trap era (think Waka Flocka Flame and Gucci Mane), around 2009 or so. Fast forward to now, I randomly came across Special Occasion on my family’s old computer. No idea how it got there, but I revisited “Turn the Page.” Personal history aside, it’s still a great song—strong production, catchy hooks, and solid vocals from Bobby V. That made me curious about the rest of the album, and it delivered. Special Occasion feels underappreciated. I don’t remember much buzz when it dropped, and even now it doesn’t get talked about enough. The album is full of well-developed tracks that play to Bobby V’s strengths. “Checkin’ for Me” and “I Was Wrong” stayed on repeat for me, while “Can’t Wait Until Later” and “Over & Over” are just as strong. The one weak spot is “Anonymous,” featuring and produced by Timbaland. The beat is decent, but not his best, and his verse doesn’t really add much. It also feels a bit out of place compared to the rest of the album. Still, it’s not terrible—just the lowest point here. The more I listen, the more it takes me back to a simpler time in my life—even with memories I’ve moved past. I’m honestly surprised this album didn’t get bigger, because it’s one of Bobby V’s most consistent projects. Maybe his debut rivals it, but this one definitely deserves more recognition.
