Discovery

Daft Punk

the take

You know how you don't know an artist's music but still respect them due to how much everyone else loves them? That's how I feel with Daft Punk... or should I say, "felt". Other than the song "One More Time", which I kind of vaguely already knew, I knew nothing about Daft Punk, other than it's a duo and that they disbanded a few years ago. (Hell, even I was saddened by that and I wouldn't consider myself a fan at the time.) So when my friend/crush was on a "Discovery" kick (shit, she probably still is 😂) and told me to give it a listen, I admittedly was a bit hesitant because in my mind, I was anticipating the rest of the album to not be as great as the opening track. I'm glad I was wrong because holy shit, what kind of magic is this? It took me a couple listens to fully understand what needed to be understood, only to find out I was overthinking my opinion on this. "Discovery" is a house album that's supposed to make you wanna move and have a good time, which succeeds in doing so. My soul became one with the album, and I couldn't help but feel nothing but good vibes. It's experimental, but doesn't make it too obvious. The duo made sure to keep us listeners on our toes, especially with each listen because on my many listens, I'm always noticing something new that I've overlooked. It's literally layered greatness. "Voyager" is my personal favorite on here not named "One More Time", but "Discovery" is so consistent to where having a favorite doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things. Better late than never, I suppose, but I finally am able to see what everyone else sees in Daft Punk. And "Discovery" is the reason why.
