the take
Let's be honest, here. Subway is really considered a one-hit wonder because of the hit "This Lil' Game We Play" featuring upcoming girl group 702. Hell, I'll go as far to even say 702 made the song as big as it was, seeing as though the girl group had a longer career than Subway. But I digress. Regardless, though... even with that label, Subway delivered quite a quality album in early '95. This is a great example of the early-Chicago music scene around this time (if you don't include another then-upcoming artist Twista, who also appears here, and the other artist who shall not be named here), as the tracks on here explored the sounds of soul, rap, and reggae within said scene at the time. The production isn't the clear highlight here; it's how harminous the four members of the group are with their mostly-impressive vocal performances throughout the nine tracks. It's kind of sad Subway didn't at least release another album, considering how big "This Lil' Game We Play" was.
