Renegades

Rage Against The Machine

the take

Renegades is a solid but ultimately non-essential detour, an album of covers that showcases the band’s strengths without pushing their identity forward. The material is already proven, drawing from politically charged and countercultural sources (from Bob Dylan to N.W.A), and Zack delivers them with his usual conviction. Still, because these words aren’t their own, the impact feels slightly diminished. Musicianship is where the album thrives. Tom Morello once again steals the show, reshaping each track with inventive textures and effects, while the rhythm section of Tim and Brad remains as tight and propulsive as ever. The band manages to make these songs unmistakably their own, even when staying relatively faithful to the originals. It works as both a tribute and a statement of influence: a map of the band’s political and musical DNA. But it also feels like a closing chapter rather than a bold new direction. It’s a strong reminder of what made Rage great, even if it doesn’t expand on it.
