the take
Summer Walker’s closure to her Over It Trilogy comes to an end with ‘Finally Over It’. Having to follow up with already ‘Over It’ and ‘Still Over It’ being incredible modern R&B projects Summer lacks the original spark from her older projects. In many tracks Summer sounds bored, tracks have features which feel misplaced ending tracks abruptly like ‘Give Me A Reason’ or ‘Robbed You’, features have made the album bloated and could’ve been shortened down to 12 tracks and been just as strong as her previous works. Stronger tracks on this album include ‘Don’t Make Me Do It/Tempted’, ‘No’ which samples Beyonce’s 2003 track ‘Yes’, and ‘Allegedly’ with Teddy Swims. It’s refreshing to see an R&B artist dive into genres like Country. Overall Walker provides a decent closure of to her trilogy with some memorable tracks and creative conceptual ideas for the album having two sides, ‘For Better’ and ‘For Worse’ alluding to marriage, hence the album cover being a homage to Anna Nicole Smith’s marriage photo. It’s a fun album but had potential to be so much stronger.
