the take
Listening to Florence road is a sigh of relief- oh good! Girls are still making kick ass music with interesting changes, heavy emotional edging, and gritty authenticity! I almost forgot what that sounded like The Irish four-piece have been building their cult following since their debut EP Fall Back, with support slots for Olivia Rodrigo, Wolf Alice, Wallows, and Royel Otis turning heads well before most people knew their name. Spring Forward is the arrival. The ep starts off with the 2026 indie rock anthem of my dreams- hanging out to dry. This song brings us through the emotional process of feminine rage- screaming and crying choruses, but thoughtful introspective verses that give context to her agony. The production sounds alive, like I'm in the pit head banging along at baby's alright (which just happened a few days ago and I'm kicking myself that I wasn't there) Rabbits can swim was released earlier this year as a single, and was my introduction to the band. The lyrics are at the forefront of this song with just a delicate piano and harmonies behind it. The lyrics could almost read as a short story out of context, but the melody exudes the yearning that can't be described with just words alone.
