the take
I'm not gonna lie to y'all, I was a bit hesitant to listen to a Mereba project. I didn't mind her appearances on other people's songs, plus I loved her verse and chorus on Spillage Village's "FRYIN", but that's all I really know of the R&B singer. Wanting to take a chance, I decided to go into her latest album, "The Breeze Grew a Fire", in the dark. In its entirety, this is an amazing project. Mereba's soft vocals are hypnotizing and go hand in hand with the soothing neo-soul sound she's given. The vibe of the project is a bit intimate, calm, and romantic, thanks to said production. Mereba's songwriting adds to the intimacy due to possessing that trait as well, making it mesmerizing for my ears. The first half of the album is the strongest, with "Out of the Blue" and "Starlight (my baby)" are the two best tracks on here for me that receives heavy replay value from me. And while the second half begins to falter a bit, possibly due to the production not deviating much from the album's opening tracks, this is still an amazing body of work. Shoot, maybe I might be sleeping on her previous projects and need to change that soon.
