the take
Songs About Jane is a sharp debut that thrives on its blend of pop hooks, funk grooves, and quiet bitterness. It circles heartbreak with a mix of vulnerability and ego. Adam’s writing isn’t especially poetic, but it’s direct. There’s a sense that these songs aren’t reflections so much as reactions, which gives the album its immediacy. The musicianship is where the record really elevates itself though. The rhythm section is tight and groove-heavy, leaning into funk and R&B more than most early-2000s pop rock. Guitar lines are clean and melodic, never overbearing, while the bass carries much of the album’s movement. Levine’s falsetto, for better or worse, becomes the defining texture. It’s not flawless, and its emotional range is somewhat narrow, but at its best, it’s effortlessly catchy and quietly bitter in a way that sticks. Fav Track She Will Be Loved
