the world i didn’t want

Natalie Jane

the take

I enjoyed Natalie Jane's "Where Am I?" more than expected, so you can imagine my slight joy when I discovered she released a new album this year. "the world i didn't want" is not a terrible record. It's different from "Where Am I?", as this one has more electropop elements incorporated throughout. On first listen, I found the electropop sound a bit annoying; I ran it back a few more times and I finally began to appreciate it a bit. It's still the worst part of this album (I'm talking to you, "any1 but myself"), but I do admire Natalie Jane for trying out something new. Actually, I'm a prominent listener of the more generic pop sound that suits Natalie Jane better, as heard on one of my favorites on here "everything 2 nothing". The rest is just good enough, but isn't really anything new I haven't heard before. It's a good thing that Natalie Jane's songwriting makes the listener feel for her and apply that to their own life if possible. That's how I felt nearly the entire duration of "the world i didn't want". It's like I'm reliving how I emotionally felt like I did on her last full length album. For what it's worth, this album still works in the grand scheme of things, so I wouldn't mind letting those songs I couldn't get into go if they happen to play. Plus, it's not the worst thing I've heard this year.
