Sofia the First

Cast - Sofia the First

the take

The depth at which the deep cuts on Sofia’s album relay a comforting sense of growth and improvement, all whilst maintaining a through-line of wonder and whimsy, can’t really be replicated. The profound questions and situations which are explored aren’t nearly the only merits which the album offers. Notably, among its excellently constructed melodies and vocal performances, arises clear commentary on: gender roles/expectations, class struggles, discovering identity, as wells as what it means to form meaningful and fulfilling relationships. The variety of perspectives—which arises from being a collection of musical themes commonly sung in tandem with more than one character—allow for the variety of topics to be covered with consideration to various modes of thought, becoming a back-and-forth as they present their claims with support from applicable rhetorical devices. Each song represents a conversation of values, where one can readily analyze the historical context which gives rise to the characters’ stances. And when formatted in contrast to another, provides intrigue through conflict as well as a complex evolution of the themes discussed. Furthermore, when some of the pieces hone in on a singular point of view, the impact of their beliefs and desires only become more apparent. One may argue how some tracks are far more light-hearted in tone, and don’t contribute to anything emotionally-resonant or thought-provoking. However they fail to realize how the more humorous tracks not only provide levity and breathing room, but commonly also contribute to the whimsical nature of the album alongside providing exposition for worldbuilding. In all, the album “Sofia the First”, created by the titular show’s cast and production, presents compelling scenarios within a magical array of familiar and homey arrangements. The impact it provides to all individuals can’t be denied with its hopeful messaging and the education and awareness it spreads on important topics. Listen to it!!
