HEELS HAVE EYES

Westside Gunn

the take

I'm trying to keep up with the many new releases from this year, and this guy, Mr. "BOOM-BOOM-BOOM-BOOM-BOOM-BOOM-BOOM-BOOM-BOOM!", wants to drop another EP in the midst of everything. But shiiiiiit, I'll be damned if I didn't check this out before the year is over. So we have "HEELS HAVE EYES". Honestly, before listening, I wasn't all too hyped for this, maybe because I just finally went through Westside Gunn's "11" and "12" projects earlier this year, and wanted a break from him for a bit. Also, a part of me was kinda glad it was an EP... but a part of me was kinda upset it wasn't an actual album? It's weird, but you kind of get what I'm saying. ANY-fucking-WAYS, this was an actual good project. It's a typical straight-forward Westside Gunn project, both lyrically and sonically (if you know, you know), and I'm okay with that. Both "EINSTEIN KITCHEN" and "GORO" were just incredible upon first listen and is already aging like fine wine after a short amount of time with every re-listen. The production, the flow, the wordplay, the vibes of the respective tracks... all were just immaculate. It's a shame that "DAVEY BOY SMITH" ruins the streak and the EP as a whole. Westside Gunn's long rambling outro on the song ruined everything for me. It's like he pulled a Nicki Minaj doing that shit. If Gunn would've shortened the outro by A LOT (or remove it completely, I'd prefer this instead), this would be up there with "EINSTEIN KITCHEN" as the second best on the project. Lastly, "EGYPT" is a good track, but is it wild for me to say that I don't see how people hype it up just a tad too much? Long story short, the outro of "DAVEY BOY SMITH" ruined this for me. Otherwise, the entirety of Westside Gunn's "HEELS HAVE EYES" would've been up there as one of the greatest things I've heard all year so far.
