the take
A record that thrives on mood and subtle emotional detail, even if it occasionally feels too reserved for its own good. The writing captures a very specific kind of adult discomfort: loneliness in crowded rooms, love that feels both essential and exhausting, etc. but the repetition of tone and perspective can make the album feel thematically narrow over time. The band is exceptional. The rhythm section is tight and propulsive without ever being showy, and the layered guitars and piano create a textured, nocturnal atmosphere. Still, that same restraint can work against them: several tracks blur together, lacking distinct melodic or structural identity. Boxer feels less like a narrative and more like a sustained emotional state. It’s cohesive, almost to a fault. The consistency creates immersion, but also limits dynamic range, leaving the album feeling a bit one-note by the end. Fav Track Brainy
