the take
A year removed from their debut album, Kris Kross came back a year later with "Da Bomb". The duo quickly shed their "backward-clothes" gimmick by this time, and adopted a more hardcore gangsta style on this album. (I mean, can you blame them? Gangsta rap was THE style of music to do/imitate around this time.) Of course, it sounded like they were trying too hard to change their prior image to this, as it didn't always fit them successfully. But when it does, we actually get a mature version of Kris Kross the world basically left for dead all because they naturally got older. (That and because they said the N-word on here... but they also said that word on "Totally Krossed Out"?) And while Jermaine Dupri did a great job at crafting the more G-Funk-ish production on here, it's evident that it's still generic to G-Funk standards, but Kris Kross still made it work to their advantage anyway. I say all of that to say, while "Da Bomb" doesn't have catchy singles like "Jump" and "Warm It Up", this album is more all-around consistent.
