the take
First listen of the album (no lyrics). First thing I noticed: the sound is SO different from what he usually does, and electro is clearly everywhere. Aperture already sets the tone. The jersey club-ish intro is a banger and such a good teaser. At first I struggled a bit with how his voice sits on the prod, but once it settles it flows perfectly. Also the “aperture” camera/light reference is kinda clever lol. American Girls starts with really good bass. The vibe is cute, very spring funk. I’m not fully sold on the chorus yet, but the bridge feels weirdly cosmic. Ready Steady Go surprised me the most. It’s very different for him and honestly one of my favs already. The bass, the bridge repeating “ready steady go”, and the keyboard notes at the end… banger. Are You Listening Yet has that spoken voice delivery that kinda gives Wet Leg energy. Chorus isn’t my fav, but the guitar solo + bridge go crazy. Taste Back is easily a highlight. Super soft pop, like Daylight’s little sister. The harmonies and vocal runs are beautiful and it just puts you in a good mood. The Waiting Game feels more like his classic chill vibe, very comforting. Then Season 2 Weight Loss brings back the funk with amazing synths and a super catchy chorus that will probably hit in concerts. Coming Up Roses is the emotional moment: violins, waltz vibes, very pretty. Then Pop switches the mood with a catchy electro pop-rock energy. Dance No More feels chaotic and cinematic, not my fav. Paint By Numbers is fine but less memorable. Finally Carla’s Song closes the album nicely. The prod slowly builds and the bridge + ending feel almost transcendent. A beautiful final note. 🎧✨
