the take
Grief, memory, youth, community, they all stack on top of each other until the record feels less like a collection of songs and more like a lived-in space. Lyrically, it’s disarmingly simple but devastatingly direct. Win Butler writes in plainspoken images but there’s a weight. Musically, it’s astonishing how full everything feels. Strings swell, accordions breathe, guitars shimmer, and the band moves like a single organism rather than individuals showing off. The arrangements are raw but purposeful, building toward euphoric climaxes that feel earned rather than engineered. As a concept, Funeral is about growing up in the shadow of loss, and how it shapes identity, memory, and connection. Few debuts feel this complete and coherent. Fav Track Rebellion (Lies)
