the take
I didn't know what to expect going into Victoria Canal's "Slowly, It Dawns" album... mainly because I had never heard of Victoria Canal until very recently (like this year). However, I did find this album quite an entertaining listen. The first half of the project almost instantly grabbed my attention for being not only musically good, but lyrically good as well. Victoria Canal's vocals come off as intimate and relatable throughout, which adds to the authenticity of the album. "California Sober" and "Talk" are two tracks that got me in a chokehold and really set the tone for the album. (Sorry, "June Baby". I see all the hype around the song, but it's just good to me.) Unfortunately, the album's vibe began to shift into the monotonous vibe side of things by the halfway point until the end. It's unfortunate because the mellow songs on this side began to blend together and not being all too interesting. Still good tracks, but not as interesting as the openers. Is this a contender for "album of the year"? Far from it. But I still find myself enjoying it enough to at least stay interested in Victoria Canal's music in the future.
