the take
Alex Turner is the standout. His observational writing is specific, and distinctly British, capturing nights out, cheap drinks, and blurred moral lines with a novelist’s eye. Tracks like “A Certain Romance” elevate the record, showing a surprising tenderness beneath the sarcasm. That said, the reliance on similar themes (nights out, girls, and bar culture) can make the album feel one-note over time. The band is tight and urgent. The guitars are jagged and propulsive, the rhythms punchy, and the performances full of youthful energy. There’s a rawness that works in its favour, but it occasionally borders on repetitive. Many tracks share similar tempos and structures, making the middle stretch blur together. The album works best as a time capsule rather than a fully realized artistic statement. It captures a moment and a scene brilliantly, but doesn’t always transcend it. That’s both its greatest strength and its limitation. It’s a confident, culturally significant debut with standout writing and infectious energy, but one that lacks the variety to truly sustain its initial high. Fav Track A Certain Romance
