the take
Modest Mouse lean hard into existentialism here, the lyrics are fragmented, and anxious. Lines about isolation, death, and the insignificance of it all hit with a strange clarity, but they can also feel distant, like signals drifting in and out of range. You catch meaning in pieces rather than being fully pulled under. It’s sonically sharp and textured. The band expands their palette creating a sound that feels appropriate. There’s a real sense of atmosphere, but sometimes that space comes at the cost of immediacy. The performances are tight, inventive, but occasionally a bit too detached to fully land emotionally. The album commits to its themes of cosmic insignificance and human smallness, and that cohesion is admirable. But like its subject matter, it can feel cold, more to admire than to enjoy.
