the take
I've always thought THIS was the album they should have titled "A Night At The Opera." Maybe nothing gets as interestingly structured as "The Prophet's Song" or "Bohemian Rhapsody", but this is a very lovable album. Full of playful and romantic tunes, there's a clear feeling of theatricality in the tracklist. You may think "well duh, that's what Queen does", but I feel they crank it to 11 here. Something about the use of their signature layered harmonies on this album feels like a cut above their other material. Also shoutout to John Deacon, who has possibly his strongest performance with the band. Not only did he write the underrated "You And I", but his basslines here are particularly good. Next time you boot up "Somebody To Love", make sure to tune into the low end. You won't regret it!
