the take
An absolute towering blend of brutality and beauty. Lyrically, they lean into gothic abstraction, less concerned with narrative clarity than atmosphere. The words feel ancient and haunted, like fragments of a forgotten text. Musicianship is the true centrepiece. The band moves effortlessly between crushing riffs and intricate acoustic passages, with dynamic shifts that feel organic rather than showy. Åkerfeldt’s vocal duality anchors the record, while the rhythm section and layered guitars create a dense, immersive soundscape. As a concept, it’s less a story than a world: a suffocating, melancholic landscape where beauty and death coexist. It can feel long and occasionally indulgent, but its ambition and execution are undeniable. Fav Track Blackwater Park
