This Old Dog

Mac DeMarco

the take

This Old Dog is an album from Mac DeMarco of 2017. It’s not a ten for me just because it doesn’t have the “mac sound” anymore, that indie rock he made in the past. But this is real mac, speaking to us. At the time he was making the album , his dad was very sick, mac thought his dad wasn’t gonna make it. The thing is his father wasn’t present in his life, he never cared about his son and Mac grew up with that. In the album, song by song he lets us know that he actually doesn’t know how to feel about the idea of his father’s death. Very complete album, beautiful music that sticks into your heart. In the songs he made about his dad we have a lot of acustic guitar, I would say it’s country music, but with his style. But we also have the singles, they are mostly songs with electric guitars on it like “Moonlight on the River”, his masterpiece; and synths, like in “On the Level”, “For the First Time” and “One More Love Song”. Again, not a masterpiece in the world of music speaking about music construction. But you feel it, you make it a personal album.
