Heavy Metal

Cameron Winter

the take

Wow. Holy fucking shit. This is a work of art. Genuinely. If you have never listened to this album, I implore you to take 43 minutes out of your day, find a spot with a nice view, and just listen. If you make art of any sort, I double-implore you; I promise you will relate to the theme of artistic self-loathing (NINA + FIELD OF COPS/CANCER OF THE SKULL!!!) that this album conveys so masterfully. For those of you unacquainted to the work of Cameron Winter, you will probably be thrown off by his unorthodox vocals and abstract (borderline absurd) lyricism. In my opinion, this is what makes the album as special as it is. Winter’s vocals/ inflection are raw, yet controlled. No matter who you are, there will be a moment on this album that tugs on your heartstrings for this reason. Lean into it. It might take a couple listens for it to truly click. This is an album that requires your full attention. Take nothing that this album presents you at face value. Every time I listen to this album (or even just hyperfixate on a random song) I always find something new to key in on, which is a testament to not only to the incredible songwriting ability of Winter, but the lush and involved instrumentals that this album offers. Favorite lyric(s): “Nina, I’m not nothing but when you lie on the piano I am reminded I am stupid”. (Nina+ field of cops) “I am blind/ and you are ugly/ it’s so easy to want you” (Naüsicaa) “In my right-minded hell/ you were born to hold my cannonball brain/ like the lord holds the moon” (Try as I may) “Love will make you fit it all in the car” (Love Takes Miles) Favorite moments: 2nd verse of Cancer of the Skull (My face is on the dollars…) 0$ - God is real Favorite Songs: Love Takes Miles Drinking Age Nina + Field of Cops 0$
