the take
If you asked for my opinion on Lords of the Underground's debut album long ago, I'd say it's one of the best albums to come out of New York in 1993. Like, in the top three and at least not number three. I wouldn't say it's top three anymore, but I will say that this is still a solid body of work. One thing I'll always give credit for L.O.T.U.G. is the fact they were energetic for the entire duration of the album. Each member's wordplay and lyricism were incredible to where they were really the highlight of the album. It's just kind of unfortunate that that doesn't always translate to good songs. Sure, by doing that, you get a "Chief Rocka" but you also get a "What's Goin' On". Then again, it's not exactly the trio's fault when they're handed jazz-funky boom bap that works when it wants to. The lows doesn't bring this down too much, mainly due to the highs ("Lord Jazz Hit Me One Time (Make It Funky)", "L.O.T.U.G. (Lords of the Underground)", "Psycho") are kind of the tallest peaks. "Here Come the Lords" isn't as fire as I thought it was, but it's still pretty damn amazing to listen every now and again, though.
