the take
If I recall correctly, a couple of songs from Yung Simmie appeared on one of my many daylists I decided to generate one day. The one that caught my attention was "Kill Bill", which had me intrigued about the project it was on, "Its Simmie Season". This isn't my first time listening to Yung Simmie, though. I first came across him via his feature on a Ski Mask the Slump Good standalone single, and thought he was decent. So for me to run this mixtape, I was surprised at how great it is. Yung Simmie is one of those rappers who doesn't change his flow all too much despite the song he's rapping on, but for me he still ended up crafting worthwhile material at the end of the day. It's no surprise that it's not too groundbreaking, but Simmie succeeds in creating a vibe that's both fun and motivational at the same time. Besides "Kill Bill", "Underdog" and "Shoot da 3" (featuring the show-stealing Denzel Curry) were the ones that I considered instant bangers on first listen; really the trinity of hype songs on here. "9 Tucked", which I discovered to be included on the SoundCloud version of the mixtape, "Traffic", and "Flexin" ended up growing on me from first listen to now. This might be one of the most slept-on projects of the SoundCloud era, as Yung Simmie proved consistency successfully on here.
