the take
The Jackson 5's second album in the same calendar year (1973) and is clearly the better one of the two. Instead of the regular pop soul sound, Motown has the Jackson brothers venturing into the funk sound here, which actually pays off for them in the best way. Of course, the classic "Dancing Machine" on here is the clear popular favorite here, but the rest of the album is still good enough to create a consistent body of work, their first in how many years. In retrospect, this album was a prelude to the eventual disco sound that would take over the decade in the years to follow. Sure, the Jackson 5 were still pissed that they weren't allowed to write their own material, but I might have to give Motown some credit here for writing the songs on this album because this might be their best album in their later-Motown career.
