Totally Krossed Out

Kris Kross

the take

I know what you could be thinking. "Kris Kross? The group that only had that one hit? They can't possibly put up a good album after that song!" I'm here to say that this album is actually good. Mac Daddy and Daddy Mac came on the scene with the infectious debut single "Jump", introducing the world to the energy they would bring. As for Kris Kross' debut album, it's kind of all over the place, both musically and lyrically. On the musical side of things, tracks range from midtempo anthems to high-energy fast tempo tracks ("Party") to slightly hardcore rap ("It's a Shame"), which makes this a slightly uneven listen. Then again, that probably was the plan because they can go back and forth between each style. I think that logic can also apply to the rhymes on here as well, as Kris Kross try to go for the hardcore rap style a bit, while at the same time having songs catering to people in their demographic. "I Missed the Bus" is a clear-cut example of that. This album kind of grew off me as time went on, as I've been leaning more toward the duo's later albums, but there's no doubt I'll always get hype when "Jump" and "Warm It Up" comes on.
