Devilish Trio
“When I first got into DEVILISH TRIO some years ago, I instantly got hooked on their take on modern Phonk music that's clearly inspired by Memphis rap, which is understandable due to the group being based in Nashville. I enjoyed the music, but I didn't actually LISTEN in depth like I did recently. Fast forward to today and I appreciate the group's debut effort more than before. Tenngage, the producer of the group, crafted beats that are a fresh modern take of the Phonk sound while citing his influence and inspiration by paying homage. The two MC's, Baker Ya Maker and Hydra, come through with the bars that perfectly fit the mold with horrorcore lyrics that double as life lessons through their points of view. The album starts off strong with "FEAR THE BEAST", as well as the first half having nothing but bangers. Things start to cool down for me starting with "KRYPTIC STYLES", and even though the second half of the album isn't as strong as the first (thanks to the somewhat out of place "IM A PERVERT"), there's still some solid songs here. Plus, it has the best song (to me) on the entire album, "LOCCED OUT", so it's a worthwhile trade-off. Phonk as a subgenre is pretty niche as it is. Add the horrorcore lyrics with that may make a listener uninterested in checking this out. If you're a fan of the kind of music, this may be for you. (And if not this album, then maybe some of the other projects by DEVILISH TRIO.”

The Collection
“Officially, "THE COLLECTION" is a compilation of the DEVILISH TRIO's single releases from late 2016 to mid-2017. Also officially, this is a better body of work than their preceding self-titled debut. Because this tape is a compilation of sorts, Tenngage's production didn't heavily rely on the nostalgic horrorcore sound this time around like it did on the previous album. If anything, it seems like the sound was actually pushed forward to be innovative in terms of being fresh for the time. I think it might be time to admit that I'm more of a fan of the slower-tempo songs, such as "FAR BEYOND DRIVEN" and "TRINITY". Honestly, the slower songs benefit both Baker and Hydra as well. Lyrically speaking, they speak more about their life and their points of view on the world more directly without incorporating too much of the typical niche horrorcore subjects this time around. I will admit that the flow scheme of both rappers hasn't changed at all, but given the beat selection, it's sometimes okay to overlook. An improvement from their self-titled debut, that's for sure.”

Vol. 2
“Not gonna lie, I found DEVILISH TRIO's music to be background music from this project on after my first listen back in 2021. It wasn't bad, but I thought it came off as kind of a knock-off of Three 6 Mafia. That's up until I rediscovered the opening track "Ritual", which is fucking amazing(!!) and it led me to run the trio's discography back. "Volume Two" is a noticeable step up from their self-titled debut mixtape. Tenngage's production sounds more cinematic to where you feel like you're actually in a horror movie. That really meshes well with both Baker Ya Maker and Hydra's lyricism about being "anti-everything", which makes what they're saying much more impactful and important to listen to. Baker and Hydra both made sure to create a visual into their respective beliefs to help make the listener question their own thoughts/ideas on life in general. Plus, it helps that "Volume Two" is more consistent this go-around. The first half pales in comparison to the second half, in my opinion. Tracks like "Ghost Stories", "In My System" and Hydra's solo track "Ideal God" are my three reasons why I have that belief. But even still, it's difficult to top a banger like "Ritual" that pretty much might be the best DEVILISH TRIO track up to this point. "Volume Two" is not background Phonk music, and I'm glad I'm finally able to see the light... or in this case, the darkness.”

Collection II
“If we're comparing "collection II" to the previous installment, overall "THE COLLECTION" is a slightly better body of work than volume two. Other than that, the two projects are similar to one another. Despite this being a compilation of loose singles released after "Volume Two", "collection II' definitely shows how much further down the horrorcore rabbit hole the DEVILISH TRIO is willing to go. Tenngage's production captures the dark and hopeless vibe well, as "Walk When It Rains" and "Laid to Waste" are two great examples that fit the description. This time around, Baker Ya Maker and Hydra both compliment Tenngage with raps that are depressing, all the while sounding like they have no hope for the future. Looking past the surface level, both Baker and Hydra both have a slight glimmer of hope to overcome their emotions. ("Slight" is an understatement, by the way.) Baker and Hydra's flows haven't really changed one bit, though I will say that if it isn't broken, don't fix it. It does become a bit monotone and somewhat contributes to a song possibly becoming background music a bit, though. Overall, there's plenty of tracks on here that I go back to frequently.”

Past Junts
“Looking back, "Past Junts" might be one of those projects I either didn't really care for or understood for the longest. Is it crazy to think I still have the same belief and still think this project is amazing? Considering the title alone, I will assume that this is truly a compilation (obviously). That said, each track sounds different in one another to kind solidify that there's really no cohesive style that Tenngage lean towards. With both Baker Ya Maker and Hydra to a lesser extent, the lyrics doesn't really hit as hard consistently here for me, but when they do, they reach my soul. "Cycle of Death" and "Distorted Reality" are two standouts that possesses me every time I listen, while "Hellraisers" is just one of those ones that puts Tenngage front and center to show the world his producing skills (which is actually amazing). Actually, though, the compilation starts off just good, but picks up after "Cycle of Death" and never really regressed all too much by the end. "Past Junts" is something I didn't completely grasp the first listen, but I just realized that there are more highs on here than I remembered.”

Volume 3
“At this point, "Volume 3" is literally more of the same as previous mixtapes. There are great songs on here, but the average number on tracks that I'd have on repeat dramatically decreased with this one. "Rotten Tooth Grin" is the clear highlight here, but overall "Volume 3" is a rollercoaster ranging from good to amazing and repeating. While Baker Ya Maker and Hydra's flow on here isn't as effective on here like on previous projects, but they're still tolerable. And when it comes to Tenngage, his production on here seems to heavily lean more towards the sampling of horror film scores than before. To me, it doesn't always land for me, but it's still great enough to where I can't help but be amazed about how innovative he's becoming in real time. Amazing project if listened to from top to bottom, but that's about it for me.”

D3
“By this point, I kind of already got the vibe that the group was nearing its end. The consistency that DEVILISH TRIO showcased earlier in their career has since but vanished. To me, it seemed like Baker and Hydra were on the same page less frequently, and is evident as such on songs like "Dying to Live" and "Reprimand". As for Tenngage, I'm more a fan of his slower-tempo songs like "The Sheep Look Up", as that sound and speed really fits the group better. The overall production on this EP isn't terrible, but it's a bit underwhelming as a whole. Decent short project, but definitely one of the weakest, if not the weakest they've released.”
