Perverts

“Quite a few people recommended me this album to listen to. Plus it's also worth mentioning that this album received quite a bit of attention in the Musicgram space for a time. I did not know what to expect at all, but that is what makes music discovery fun, right? But as soon as I began playing the opening title track, seeing how long the track is, and then proceeded to see how long the project is (with nine tracks, mind you), as well as the music I was concurrently being exposed to, I was ready to shut this off and play a different album entirely. But Ethel Cain's "Perverts" actually put me in a trance because a part of me was intrigued by how this body of work was created and I was curious about what to expect every listening second. The ambient dark and depressing moody soundscape of it all somehow captivated me to finish the EP. It's really the musical equivalent of being in total absolute nothingness, with very little lyrics sprinkled throughout as thoughts, per se. I've read that this subgenre of music Ethel Cain went for on here is known as "drone", and as someone who's only a visitor of said subgenre for an hour's time, I believe it fits that mold precisely. That said, while my overall opinion of "Perverts" just makes this into the "Good" threshold, it's not really my cup of tea. Emotionally speaking, I understand the vibe she was going for, but with the tracks going on longer than they should have (maybe it's just me not liking that aspect), as well as the mostly monotonous vibe presented here, "Perverts" isn't really one of those albums I can play one song from and go on about my day. It's not really my flavor of choice in terms of music, but at least I can appreciate it for being unique and stepping out of the box. One thing's for sure, I can see why others may enjoy it more than I do.”

“before listening to the entire album, i’ve already known “sun bleached files”, which didn’t get me really interested in hayden’s work, but then i heard “american teenager” and absolutely loved it. that’s why i decided on listening to this album. i found it great, but then got into the lore and changed my mind instantly. the entire got so hard engraved into my mind, that i couldn’t sleep at night for a couple of weeks because i were still thinking about it. the story behind the music is just so entertaining, yet brutal. author’s imagination is amazing to come up with a concept like this. one of my all time favorites. can’t go through a week without listening at least once to “preacher’s daughter”. what surprised me most, is that hayden, is transgender and didn’t go through any vocal operations, yet her voice is so captivating, she sounds like an angel. my favorite songs on the album? “american teenager”, a classic. also “strangers” got me hooked. but the darker turn on the album, which are “gibson girl” and “ptolemaea” are genius songs either. the instrumental ones, especially “televangelism” is just so beautiful. i can’t wait until the release of the next parts of the story - “preacher’s wife” and “preacher’s mother”. i also yearn for the movie based on hayden anhedonia’s universe.”
