EXPERIMENTAL RAP
“First half is like a 6, second half is a 7–call it 6.5? I think this score might be higher if the album were shorter, not because the album runtime was too long, but because there are a few tracks that don’t add much of anything or are derivative of other tracks. I’m going to condense the album into a playlist of my 8 or so favorite tracks and see how I feel about it then. By peggy’s standards, it’s probably his least experimental album despite the title. I think where peggy thrives is in nuance, and his slower, more stripped-back tracks are often his most groovy and creative. But on this album it felt like he emphasized the bangers, but those bangers were maybe too aggressive, had little nuance, mostly the same triplet flow, and… dubstep? 6.5 is an enjoyable listen, it’s just a step down from the extremely high bar that his other albums have set, where they all range between ratings of 8 to 9 or above. We still have ILMLDFY to fall back on, released only a year ago and an absolutely incredible album. I wish peggy had maybe taken more time between projects to really hone a fresh sound and creative direction. I also think the heel character he is playing in the media lately is awesome, but it kinda falls flat when the album wasn’t mind-blowing and was a bit repetitive, and when most of the “response to the haters” and “I don’t give a fuck” tweets come off as a bit whiny and I-actually-do-give-a-fuck. Also not sure why the publicity stunt was necessary, even though it’s funny, given that he has… a ton of fans already. I’ll still anticipate the next project and I still like the album despite some critiques!”

“TBH I don’t think this is that experimental for Peggy But I think that’s the point, the irony this title for his most accessible album I think if this album was titled anything else it would have warmer reception”

EXPERIMENTAL RAP
“Man, is my goat washed? My first time genuinely getting bored listening to a Peggy. There are some good songs on here. There aren't any *bad* ones persay. Just a lot of stuff that feels like leftovers from other albums he just slapped on here and called it a day. And maybe thats the point, like this is just an album of whatever he wanted to make, but man does it feel disappointing coming off of one of my favorite albums of all time. I mean, if you've listened to every Jpeg album and you want more, go off you'll have a fun time, but this is easily his worst imo. Its just... fine? It feels super unpolished, which i NEVER thought I'd say about a Peggy album. Not to mention the cringe Kanye references, dawg just let him go. Overall pretty forgettable, just feels like he didn't care about making this one and so just put out whatever. Sad :( hopefully the next album is better, I have faith it will be. Every great artist needs a miss or two”

I LAY DOWN MY LIFE FOR YOU: DIRECTOR'S CUT
“I feel like I LAY DOWN MY LIFE FOR YOU is actually perfection, so, the directors cut is always going to suffer by just having more songs that I feel 'meh' on. There are some standouts on this album, Protect the Cross is amazing, I love Jordan Rules, but I could deal without Cult Status and Coke or Dope, and a lot of these tracks just aren't super memorable. However, that is the point of a directors cut isn't it? Like how to you even review this. It added some amazing songs and some meh songs, but if you like I LAY DOWN MY LIFE FOR YOU a lot like I do, definitely check it out. If that's not a favorite Peggy album for you, you could skip this one.”

I LAY DOWN MY LIFE FOR YOU
“Man, I know this isn't 'peak peggy' but it's what introduced me to his music, and experimental rap to begin with, so it has a special place in my heart. Also, I literally can't name a song I don't like on this entire album, and exmillitary is now in my top ten tracks of all time. Literally perfect (imo)”

EXPERIMENTAL RAP
“This album is a marathon. It blasts your ears with an eclectic, but organized production Peggy is famous for, the second half carries the same general themes while slowing it down. First time this album could seem difficult to get through with its neck, breaking changes in vibe, but I found it to be oddly well paced. Although it’s not perfect, it held my attention for the whole length of the album leaving me with many moments of amazement. If you like JPEGMAFIA you’ll like this if you don’t like him, you won’t.”

I LAY DOWN MY LIFE FOR YOU: DIRECTOR'S CUT
“It's crazy how this album as a whole grew on me in the time I first listened to it up until the present day. While I didn't understand it at first, I can definitely say I appreciate JPEGMAFIA's experimentation by doing whatever the hell he wants and succeeding in doing so. That's why I was lowkey excited and shocked that he released a "DIRECTORS CUT" of the album that fully displays Peggy's vision of the album. (Moreso the Bandcamp version, but I digress.) This feels more complete in a sense, as I'm a fan of the transitions and mixing that makes this feel more complete. Still fucking amazing when it's all said and done.”

SCARING THE HOES
“It’s one of the most surprising rap records I’ve heard in a long time. Danny Brown effortlessly integrates his style with JPEG’s production. A fun fact was that the entire project was produced on a Roland SP-404SX. Mind you, using an older piece of hardware can already prove to be a challenge, but using it for a whole album is beyond impressive. The album continues to blow me away after every listen and still remains in my rotation.”
