Somethin' For The People
“A friend of mine who I was really close with was upset that I "didn't know as much R&B" as her at the time as they showed me a song by the group Somethin' for the People. I mean... shit, it's not my fault that rap is my main favorite genre. Anyway, I went through a slight discography dive into Somethin' for the People's music (at least their first two albums) and was kind of impressed with what they had to offer. So due to a song that popped up into my head randomly (the song will be mentioned later down in this review), I've decided to revisit the group's music to see if I still enjoyed their work the same as I did back then. Somethin' for the People's self-titled debut musically sounds better than I thought. It's kind of not surprising that that's the case because the trio of Sauce, Cat Daddy, and Fuzzy were all writing songs for other artists (such as En Vogue and Brandy) before releasing their own music. The trio always sound in sync with one another and that aspect helps add value to the tracks on here. The songwriting itself is pretty damn surface level and doesn't really go into deep about the topic of love (and its various interpretations/iterations), but not too simplistic like a child wrote the album. "There I Go" (the one that randomly appeared in my head) and "On My Mind" are the two main highlights that I enjoyed the most. The rest are somewhat forgettable, but at the same time still cool enough to let finish play. (As for the last track, the C&B—country and blues—track "You Know What Would Be a Trip" is out of place as hell... and also files under the "so-bad-it's-still-good". Barely, though.) Overall, an amazing album. I'm kinda shocked this got overlooked, but at least the group got some flowers some years later.”
